Ryerson University is a public research university in Toronto, Canada, and includes a School of Fashion as part of its Faculty of Communication and Design. The School of Fashion offers two unique areas of specialization, Fashion Design and Fashion Communication. A four-year program, the first year includes the study of pattern making and construction, communication design, visual communication, textiles, marketing, and art history for both tracks. For students in the Communication Program, the second, third, and fourth years contain instruction in graphic design, fashion illustration, photography, design and costume history, promotion, consumer behavior, and new venture startups. Students are also required to pursue professional business electives. Students in the Design Program spend their three years focusing on specific details of design such as computer-aided design, apparel design, textile design, materials management, and leatherwork. Both Design and Communication students are required to complete 400 hours of documented work-study in at least two distinct work placements during the course of their four years at Ryerson University. The School of Fashion at Ryerson University is a member of the International Foundation of Fashion Technology Institutes and is also involved in a number of exchange agreements and other international initiatives, establishing the School of Fashion as one of the leading undergraduate design programs in the world. This coming fall, Ryerson University’s School of Fashion will offer an innovative new program for a Master of Arts in Fashion, the first of its kind in Canada.
